DID YOU KNOW ?
Women get hernias too! Every week there are an average of ten women here at Shouldice Hospital for surgery. Most of them are here for repair of inguinal hernias but many need help to repair an old incision from a cesarian section delivery or some other operation. Women also account for many of the umbilical hernias we repair. When an indirect inguinal hernia occurs in a female the path of the hernia is along the "Canal of Nuk", known as the inguinal canal in males.

Glynnwood Retirement Residence Changes Hands
In 1981 the Children of Dr. Edward Earle Shouldice began a project to develop a community in which elderly people could retire and continue the gracious manner of living to which they had become accustomed as they matured.
Glynnwood was built to include 200 independent suites, as well as facilities for formal dining, special events, billiards, crafts, and personal fulfillment such as a library and small chapel.
The concept was based on the need for companionship from peers and the need for vitality in the lives of those who's spouse had passed on. It required a management philosophy built on respect for all who worked or lived there and the realization that dignity is a core value in the process of delivering service to people.
Mrs. W. H. Urquhart became the president of Glynnwood and was supported by her brother, Dr. Byrnes Shouldice, and a team of dedicated staff. Together they molded what became the premier retirement residence in Canada.
The property includes 7 acres, landscaped by Glynnwood maintenance staff, a fish pond, the environs of which are inhabited by red fox, deer, raccoons, great blue heron, Canada geese and more. A putting green and private gardens for the green thumbs in the house are also on the property.
For nineteen years Glynnwood was a part of the Shouldice Management portfolio and contributed to the environment that Shouldice patients know today. During the past 5 years spouses of Shouldice Hospital patients traveling from afar could stay in Glynnwood guest suites during their spouses recovery from surgery. This practice was curtailed when popular demand for residential suites became too large and the guest suites were needed for full time Glynnwood residents.
On June 29th of this year, Glynnwood, seen as a jewel within the industry, changes hands. The lifestyles corporation, a company focused on retirement living, wanted a "flagship" residence for their company which as residences across Canada. An offer to purchase Glynnwood was made and, after much consideration, was finally accepted. Our best wishes to the future of Glynnwood and all who work and live there.
