I just had my left inguinal hernia repaired at Shouldice with Dr.Ross. I met great people and healed quickly with minimal pain. I stayed the full 4 days. There are 4 stationary bicycles in the common rooms that were put to use the day after my surgery. This stretches the area. The clamps used on me pinched a bit, but once removed, I felt incredible. There are no televisions in the rooms. This is to encourage people to move around. The nurses were attentive and caring. If I have to get the other side done, it will be at Shouldice!... Thank you Shouldice Hospital and Dr. Simmons for a great hernia repair experience. The 3rd floor nurses were kind and patient and the food was plentiful and very good. If I ever need another hernia repair, Shouldice will be where I go!!... See MoreSee Less
Just got home from this wonderful place.
They definitely know what they are doing.
All the staff were great and kept us medicated, just the right amount.
Don't bother ever going anywhere else, avoid the mesh and get it done right, once.
Also, great to meet other patients and tell war stories....... See MoreSee Less

I just got home from an umbilical hernia repair. From the moment I checked in till being discharged, I experienced nothing but the utmost level of professionalism from the nursing staff who catered to everyone's needs, to the surgeons who came by twice a day to see how I was feeling, to the staff in the kitchen for the wonderful food. The atmosphere made it more relaxed, met a lot of great people who were going through the same thing. I would strongly recommend the Shouldice clinic for anyone who requires a hernia repair.... Great all around experience at Shouldice... with the exception of billing department. Even though they could do direct payment through my insurance company... they insisted on charging me directly and thus making me deal with my insurance company. This was my second visit to Shouldice, the first time I insisted and they did it directly. During this visit, another patient insisted and they did it. It's sad when people don't want to do their job. This kind of tainted an otherwise great experience.... See MoreSee Less

My cousin and I took my uncle to Shouldice Hospital for his hernia repair. Below is my cousin's review for the hospital.
We traveled to Shouldice Hospital last week from the States to have my dad’s inguinal hernia repaired. Now, he’s healing up nicely back home.
I’d like to give my special thanks to Dr. Alexander, who operated on my dad and repaired his large inguinal hernia. He is not only an exceptionally skilled surgeon, but a compassionate doctor who put his patients at ease and looked after their care. Despite his busy operating and clinics schedule, he took the time to visit my dad and check on his wound around 5:30 p.m. post surgery and then again around 5:30 a.m. on the third day before he rushed into surgery. When I met with him before our departure, he took the opportunity to print out additional documents explaining potential post operative symptoms and in home care. He’s a doctor true to his profession and I wish him many more years of joy of healing.
The hospital staff we met were professional and courteous. Cindy, the hospital manager, guided us through the entire admission process and was very accommodating to our needs and concerns. The hospital is efficiently managed and there are many rules in place to ensure a safe and fast patient recovery. Some patients may find the rules restrictive but they do align very well with our priority so we are more than happy to oblige.
We did as much research as possible before we decide to have my dad’s surgery done at Shouldice. Factors we considered include:
1. Shouldice used natural tissue repair technique with surgical steel wire instead of the common mesh repair pervasive in the States. Since my dad didn’t have any pain with his hernia despite its huge size, he was scared of long term impact of mesh in his body and associated mesh pain and suffering described by some of the unfortunate patients of mesh repair. With Shouldice repair procedure, the worst that can happen is a recurring hernia (the recurring statistics is actually very low), which is infinitely better than chronicle pain in our opinion.
2. Shouldice does a LOT of hernia repair. The saying goes: Practice makes perfect. We feel assured we are in good hands when it comes to both surgical technique and expertise.
3. Shouldice keeps patients for two more days post surgery. Some patients or even doctors had complaints about this on line. We see it as an advantage since we travel a long way from the States. The last thing we want is complications post surgery(within 48 hours) while we are making our way back to the States. I personally know a hernia patient who landed in the ER the day after surgery to have a catheter put in because he could not urinate. Similar complications, such as internal bleeding, could be avoided when patients are kept in hospital for observation.
4. Since it’s an open surgery, Shouldice uses local anesthesia with IV sedation instead of general anesthesia required by laparoscopic repair. My dad is an elderly patient (72) with possible heart problems. So we are happy we can avoid any potential risk and complications due to general anesthesia.
5. The possible downside of a Shouldice repair is bigger incision wound, which probably has a more painful recovery post surgery than the laparoscopic alternative. But, with all things considered, we decided it was better to have short term pain now than potential long term pain later. For his own experience, he was pretty uncomfortable the night of the surgery and could not rest well. Since then, he has recovered steadily with more exercises every day. The long trip home was not as bad as we feared.
It’s gratifying to know we have made the right decision to come to Shouldice to get my dad’s hernia finally taken care of and the entire trip is well worth our time, energy, and money (his Medicare does not cover this). We recommend Shouldice highly to other fellow hernia sufferers who has similar concerns as we do.... See MoreSee Less
Family member just had the operation on Tuesday. Unable to reach him through your switch board, was not ask to leave a message as to whom called. Tried for 4 days to reach him. On Friday you ask to call back as he wasn't responding to your paging. Turns out he checked out on Thursday!
Unbelievable communications for a world class facility!
This also happened to other friends of this patient!... See MoreSee Less
I got here last Thursday for my four night, five day stay at Shouldice. The staff from my Dr Smith , Munir from Iran whom I met at registration four weeks ago and all thru this week are memorable with quite a few other at this totally professional and inviting hospital.
People come here from everywhere for a procedure practiced at Shouldice since 1945. The eclectic group of patients is memorable and these folks all make the experience very special.
I would recommend this facility to anyone who needs a hernia operation. They are the best and over 300,000 ex patients would agree with me.... See MoreSee Less

My son was just released today after having surgery on Wednesday. As a mom, I was pretty nervous leaving him in Toronto as we are in Windsor. Let me tell you, the care they provided was far greater than we could have gotten locally. His recovery is going very well, much better than people I know that have had the same procedure. Not to mention the friendships he made with other patients was a great experience. He raved about the food, the atmosphere, and the staff. The atmosphere is very welcoming and comfortable...just beautiful. The grounds are absolutely stunning. At first I was a little concerned with the "rules", no TV's in the rooms, no phones allowed in the rooms, etc., but now that I see that those rules are only to promote recovery and mobility (they want the patients to walk to the lounges and not lay in bed all day), I understand what they are trying to accomplish. True top notch facility and would recommend to anyone needing a hernia repair.... See MoreSee Less
Had surgery last September for 3 incisional hernias. Dr. Alexander was very friendly and down to earth, a really nice man, but also probably the best hernia doctor on earth. He got rid of a very ugly scar from previous colostomy surgery and left my with a neat, thin red line. He not only repaired a very serious hernia problem but made my stomach look good. Today, my work brought me to Shouldice and it was so nice to be back and see some of the nurses i remember from last year.... See MoreSee Less
The care that the doctors an the staff have for you as a patient is unsurpassed in any hospital I've ever seen. Everyone I talk to you had great things to say about their care and surgery. Amazing Hospital with an Amazing Staff ! Every patient I met and talked to while I was there, was also equally impressed .
Doctors are the greatest , and full of humor. Very very Nice people. This is the place to get your hernia repaired !!! Resort settings rather then just a Hospital, But we all came for the Shouldice repair technique and it is amazing and truly works !
Beautiful settings were a bonus. I almost tried to find an excuse to stay bit longer:)
Despite my busy schedule, I came from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and met lots of other good people(smart People) that also traveled far to get the operation done here, few from even Europe, cause we all have done our home work before hand, and we knew we didn't want to take chances with mesh repairs.
I am very impressed- Love to share it-

Having been at the Shouldice back in 1987 & 1997 for different hernias, I just came back for an umbilical hernia surgery on Feb. 27, 2017. Shouldice is the best in the world as they have a unique technique to repair all the different kind of hernias. Not having to put patients to full anesthesia, the local anesthesia enables patient to recover a lot quicker and be able to be up walking around hours from surgery. They have been perfecting their technique since the 1930s. I had two inguinal hernias repaired before and I am skating pretty much every day, I have never had a problem since the surgery. The staff are wonderful and really take care of the little details which makes your stay a most enjoyable experience. And the food, well I would rate it as a 5 star resort. I highly recommend the Shouldice hospital for any hernia surgery.

This was my first surgery (left inguinal hernia) and I was nervous about going in. My father, both brothers and a couple of friends had their surgery at Shouldice and it came highly recommended...still I read some unfavourable reviews and was concerned.
When I arrived, it was a relaxed pleasant atmosphere and my roommate and I hit it off right away.
The next morning I was taken to the waiting area for surgery and was quite nervous, but the nurses made me feel comfortable. My wait was a little long, but I wasn't going anywhere and they appologized for the wait.
In the operating room the nurses saw that I was a little nervous and they chatted with me and reassured me that I was in the right place. We joked around and before I knew it the anesthetist had me feeling nothing.
The surgeon (Dr. Slater) entered the room and although he is not the most personal person at the hospital, he is an excellent surgeon and very professional. The surgery was over before I knew it and I was back in my room for a few hours rest.
I must admit I tried to go without pain medication and that was a mistake. I don't like taking any pharmaceutical products but it was necessary for this. It was quite painful, but with the Advil it was manageable. I felt much better after the second day.
The food was healthy and palatable and the service staff was friendly and helpful. I am not going to pick apart the food and service...let's be clear, this is a hospital, not a cruise ship and there are always those who will find something to complain about. We were not there to get fat on steak and lobster.
The nurses were very friendly and concerned. They were on top of any complaint to ensure there were no complications from the surgery. There was one nurse who was a little short, but every hospital needs a stern nurse that everyone is afraid of to keep the whiners under control. I liked her because I know she did her job well and didn't take it personal.
Overal my experience was excellent and if I need to go back for the other side, this is where I will go because I trust the doctors , the staff and the procedure.... See MoreSee Less
Just arrived home from Shouldice hospital after having a inguinal hernia surgery on the left side last Monday morning. I'm am giving this hospital 5 stars. The hospital is renowned for hernia repair procedure. People come from all parts of the world to have hernia surgery at this hospital. I went in hearing about the amazing experience people had at this hospital, and came out amazed my self.
The staff were on the ball at all times, and very approachable. You are told exactly what to expect if you do what they suggest. While at the hospital you are encouraged to walk around the halls and lounges, and while doing this you get to talk to all the other hospital patients. What is cool is if you are their in the summer you can walk around the grounds grass trees and gardens. I had a very interesting room mate to talk to over the four days in the hospital that made the experience even more enjoyable.
Other than the day of surgery you eat in a dinning room. Now the food is great, you get breakfast, lunch, dinner, and evening snack served to the table. All day coffee, teas, juice, and filtered water that you are expected to get yourselves between meal times to encourage mobility. The hospital is setup perfectly for patients speedy recover.... Just got home from having two Inguinal Hernia surgery's (left & right) on Jan 30th and Feb 1st. I met a lot of other great patients and we had many painful laughs which helped make the time pass quickly.
Both surgeons did an incredible job. Dr. Degani performed the first one and Dr Simmons performed the second one.
I want to thank all the nurses and staff on the second floor who showed compassion and were very supportive before and after both surgery's.
Also, all the staff in the pre-operative room, who made me comfortable as I waited for the surgery's.
Last but not least are the chef's and the serving staff. Every meal was different, well prepared and very enjoyable. I am sure i gained a few pounds. The serving staff were always there making sure you didn't need anything.
The room was comfortable and much nicer than a typical hospital room.
Even though there was pain and discomfort at first (which I expected) every member of the Shouldice staff made the entire experience bearable and played a big part in my initial recovery and going home well on the way to a full recovery.
Thank you to everyone at Shouldice, I will never forget all the wonderful people I met. Keep up the great work!

I was very impressed with the staff at Shouldice and the processes they follow to repair over 20 hernia per weekday. I realized after opening the health app on my iPhone that I walked 4.6km the day following the surgery and 6.1km the day after. I still feel some tightness in the area but it's improving everyday. I recommend Shouldice to anyone who has a hernia. I will miss all the new people that shared some painful laugh during my stay. Good times with the other patients. Don't go the mesh route. Plasters only last so long on a bobo... Don't patch it, fix it with Shouldice.... See MoreSee Less
JUST got back from the Shouldice Hospital last week following 2 hernia surgeries (Jan 4th & 6th).
The overall experience was excellent. Having read the reviews, I certainly can relate to the positive ones...and sympathize with those who's experiences were not what they expected.
Going in, I'd done my research as one would expect for booking any procedure in the "lower groin" area. You definitely want to speak to other guys who've had either the Shouldice or mesh done...I'd heard more than a few nightmarish stories about complications with the mesh vs. nothing but positives about Shouldice.
As an active person, I was initially leaning towards the mesh until I educated myself and eventually booked with Shouldice for a number of reasons; ultimately I decided to steer clear of the mesh due to a number of infection/complication stories I'd heard (verified) from a trusted co-worker whose father had issues with the mesh; while he could only rave about the Shouldice procedure (x2) he'd gone with.
All-in-all the procedure was a success...still shuffling around the house...a bit of pain at one of the locations, but I'm confident that will pass with time. The staff was really great...considering they have to deal with so many moaning and groaning men every day. The food was very good considering how bad hospital food can be...meds when you need them...clean place...overall a pleasant stay despite the post-op pain (I probably should have asked for more pain meds more often...).
For my fellow floor-mates...post-op we were like a hernia surgery version of band of brothers...comparing pain thresholds...trying not to laugh, cough, sneeze...(very painful at the time) slowly walking up and down the hallways as required...watching a few sports on tv in the lounge together...got to know just about everyone during my 6 day stay.
Still recovering, but getting better with each passing day...I'd recommend it...and if anyone has any questions please feel free to contact me via message.... See MoreSee Less
I can't think of one thing bad to say about this place. The staff are very professional, knowledgeable, and very kind to everyone. This facility is very clean (I'm talking exceptionally clean, cleaner than any other hospital I've been in) and inviting with lots to do, including pool tables, shuffleboard, a grand piano to play, work out equipment, etc. As for hospital food, this is like no hospital food I have ever tasted. The food is first class. I've eaten at restaurants that were nowhere near as good.
But the best thing of all, is that I was in more pain before the surgery than after it. I followed their instructions to the letter and was in no pain at all. You're up and walking after 4 to 5 hours after surgery, keep icing the area, take the pain medicine regularly, and keep walking and you will be writing a review of Shouldice Hospital just like this one.
Thank you everyone at Shouldice. I will definitely tell everyone that will listen about my experience and will recommend (if needed) that they have the procedure done at this hospital.

In fact, I was concerned about gaining weight while enjoying the meals. The grounds are a joy to stroll around. I had great conversations and interactions with the fellow patients. I discovered my hernia about 4 weeks ago. Of course watching videos on youtube doesn't help. I called the walkin clinic here in Nova Scotia and I was told it was inguinal. I tried to get into my family doctor and the receptionist told me it would take 11 days and she would have to get me a referral to a specialist. And then it may take 8 to 9 months to get sergury if they even decide to do it. I was so upset. I am 38 years old and I was terrified. I have never had any health problems. I am a hair stylist and have 3 clients who are nurses. 2 of them recommended the Shouldice. I called our health board and the sergury is covered 60% and my husbands insurance covers the semi private room 100%. I called The Shouldice and spoke with Eric. At this point I was actually crying. He made me feel very comfortable about my sergury and I immediately knew the Shouldice was my choice. Thank you Eric. Then I spoke to Cindy and the service was absolutely amazing. Cindy made things happen so quickly. 3 weeks ago she told me I had to lose 15 lbs before sergury. I knew I could do it. I have been using My Fitness Pal and I have lost 9.6 lbs in 3 weeks. I have 5 more to go. Thank you Cindy for all your help. Clients have been asking me if I am afraid or nervous. I tell them I'm actually excited to meet the family at Shouldice. I spoke with a client of mine last week and she told me her friend had the mesh sergury done here and has been off for a year with complications. Just yesterday I spoke with another client who told me her husband had the sergury last August and has had pulling and swelling in his scrotum ever since. To me there is no question. Why someone would chose somewhere other than Shouldice is beyond me. My sergury is set for March 9th. I will be so happy to have my hernia fixed so I can have my life back to normal.... Back home now. Thanks to Dr. Guirguis and the team at Shouldice Hospital for repairing my hernia. Admitted Monday, operated on Tuesday, half the clips off yesterday, the rest today. No pain! I am so lucky. Absolutely the best hospital experience, Shouldice pioneered this quick-healing surgical method over 60 years ago and it absolutely is orders of magnitude safer and faster than regular hospital mesh procedure.... I've had a hernia repaired last year on my right side and it's the absolute ONLY place in the world I would trust to complete the surgery. Amazing results and magnificent expert surgeons and knowledgeable staff. I liked it so much that I'm going back to get my left side done! Well, it's not as simple as that. I tried to move a piano and that's how I developed the second hernia. The first hernia repair stood up to the piano move (almost bionic now) but the mere human left side blew out! Oh well, at least I know exactly where to get it repaired.... See MoreSee Less
